What is Ocularic?
The basics
Ocularic is an umbrella term for identities with themes of being watched, paranoia, unease, dread, eye horror, forbidden knowledge, and the call of the unknown. Ocularic is not limited to gender identity, and can extend to one's alterhuman identity, orientation, etc. In fact, ocularic is closely tied to themes of inhumanity, being beyond mortal comprehension, and the pursuit of forbidden knowledge changing you in ways you cannot undo.Ocularic is not inherently under other umbrella terms such as kenochoric, but individuals may experience it in relation to them.
Ocularic experiences
Some experiences that may be considered ocularic are:- The constant feeling of being watched, the way your neck bristles when you feel eyes on you.- The draw to learn more, even if what you discover may destroy you. You know you'll never be the same again, but you can't sate your hunger.- A disconnect from humanity, as though you're only a spectator to a people you can never truly belong to.- A fixation on eyes/eye imagery.Ocularic experiences are broad and often encompass both the paranoia of being watched, and being the monster doing the watching.
Ocularic concepts
Some concepts that can be considered ocularic are:- The Lovecraftian staple of horrors beyond man's comprehension, even witnessing it for too long is too much to handle. No one who understands will ever be themselves again, not really.- Glowing eyes in the distance as you shine your flashlight, unable to tell if it's just an animal watching you or something far worse. When you shine your light on it again, the eyes are gone, but you still feel it staring back at you.- Stage fright, how you freeze with thousands of eyes staring you down. What are their intentions? Why won't they look away? Your heart is pounding.- The morbid curiosity in the terror of it all, the drive to learn more, even if what you learn will destroy you. You're too far gone, aren't you?- Something that looks human, but then its eyes open. All of them. Its body is covered in clusters of eyes and it roams the streets, like a predator on the hunt. You don't want it to see you. It already has.
